Stars out for CU recruiting class

"Stars schmars."

That's what B.G. Brooks of the Rocky Mountain News once told me about how Colorado coach Dan Hawkins responds to questions about the star system of rating recruits.

Of course, the reality is that system, while not perfect at all, does carry weight, as the more top-rated players a school procures, usually, the greater the liklihood of on-field success, once you get past the land mines of qualifying them academically, injuries, grades in school and competitiveness to play.

So what goes into determining if a prep player is a star, has a star, or five of them after his name? What does it all mean, really, if Joe Running Back from Big City, USA or Tommy Linebacker from Back Woods Outhouse Prep has two stars or four other than he might be considered a better talent?

For those who don't know the breakdown, Adam Munsterteiger presents his term paper on the subject at BuffStampede.com.

Check it out and then tell me if I get one star or two.

"While the Buffaloes' 2006 signing class ranked towards the bottom of the Big 12, they find themselves on the opposite end of the spectrum this year. To date, Colorado has compiled the nation's 14th ranked recruiting class and the second ranked class in the conference. BuffStampede.com provides further commentary on the team rankings and gives a short breakdown of the star system:
