Canes, Crimson Tide, Wolfpack do Christmas

No one can wait anymore to open Christmas presents as three schools have decided on who they want next to run their programs.

Reportedly, Miami has decided on defensive coordinator Randy Shannon to replace the fired Larry Coker, Alabama wants West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez and North Carolina State has picked Boston College's Tom O'Brien.

BuffaloTruth...Shannon is as deserving as any assistant for his track record of success as a defensive leader. However, something to keep in mind, he has never been a head coach anywhere, and at Miami, there is great pressure to win. Now, that doesn't preclude him from being an amazing success, especially considering his success as a collegiate and professional player and his resume coaching but there is more risk, a greater unknown with him getting the job.

Honestly, it's surprising how the Canes, once a glorious program, didn't have top head coaches slobbering to interview. Times have changed. This is a wonderful opportunity for Shannon. He will recruit. If he can lead as the head man, look out. Win in Coral Cables and he can write the ticket for his future.

Rodriguez, if he accepts the job in Tuscaloosa, will be a tailor-made fit, a sure-fire winner. He recruits very well, he coaches a wide-open offense and will be the best coach for the Crimson Tide since Gene Stallings. He is superior to everyone since Stallings. Alabama may have finally found the right guy. He may not be Bear Bryant, o.k., he's not Bear Bryant, but he will likely do special things for that school.

O'Brien may not be well known nationally but he is an accomplished coach. Why he is leaving Boston College, who knows. Money? Other reasons? In the end, he is taking a big risk leaving Chesnut Hill, where he has built the Golden Eagles into a solid program to take the Wolfpack job, where he will have to recruit in state against new North Carolina coach Butch Davis.

All three schools above got talented, hot coaches. It says here Miami is taking a risk, which it should be applauded for, but then again, they had to as no one seemed to want that job. N.C. State scores and Boston College loses. Alabama might end up scoring big.

Coming soon
