Munsterteiger breaks down pass rusher

Colorado's needs along the defensive line are no secret and the Buffs have put forth effort to solidify that part of the team in recruiting. The latest name to be added to the verbal commitment list is a junior college end.

The Black and Gold Breakdown chased down Adam Munsterteiger of BuffStampede.com to get his comments on that news.

BGB: The Buffs get a pass rusher, someone you told us about this week, Drew Hudgins, a juco from Kansas. Guys who can get to the quarterback are always at a premium, Adam, and his numbers look good (14 sacks) but I see 4.9 forty speed and his list of offers, well, hardly blow you away. Putting the squeeze on you -- is Hudgins an impact player, an Abraham Wright, or is he more a contributor, competition for the end position?

Munsterteiger: While I am not willing to go out on a limb and call him the next Abe Wright, Hudgins is absolutely the type of instant impact defensive end the Buffs’ staff was in search of.

"A North Carolina coach told me that Drew Hudgins could help put them back on the map,” Hudgins’ coach at Highland Community College told me.

That might be a bit extreme… but there is little doubt the Buffs got a good one here. Rivals.com ranks him as the nation’s sixth best JC defensive end from the Class of 2007. And the fact that Hudgins is going to be a mid-year transfer and will be in for spring ball makes him that much more valuable.

Sure his scholarship offer list – which includes Kansas, North Carolina, NC State and UConn – is not eye-opening. But you have to look at JUCO offer lists in a different light than a high school prospect’s scholarship offer list. Most college coaches will prefer to sign prep players unless they are looking for immediate help at a particular position (P.T. Gates’ only listed offer is from CU and he is the nation’s top ranked JC running back prospect).

You mentioned Hudgins’ forty speed… he might not be fastest defensive end running in a straight line but he is very quick off the ball and has the ability to close on quarterbacks.
