Crazy rumors swirling

Nothing like wild speculation to get people's hearts beating fast, their mouths moving and the debate started.

Found some junk food to share with you this morning.

Hey, it's Friday, live a little.

Bob Stoops, one of college football's outstanding coaches, could be a candidate to replace the fired Larry Coker at Miami, Fla.

Now, I said, could be because Tom Dienhart's column at Sportingnews.com says it that way, although he adds that Stoops leaving Norman is likely a "mega longshot." That Stoops name is even mentioned is intriguing, especially considering his success as a defensive coordinator for Steve Spurrier at Florida.

The guess here, and that's all it is, is Rutger's Greg Schiano is the hunk the Hurricanes are lusting after for the opening. Either him or Rich Rodriguez of West Virginia or another longshot, Jeff Tedford of California. Remember, the school once looked West for Dennis Erickson, who was grinding things out at Wyoming before heading to Coral Gables. Erickson turned out alright. Tedford is a superior prospect to Erickson.

Another crazy rumor?

Dienhart reports that he is hearing USC coach Pete Carroll might be interested in returning to the pro game to replace a shaky Dennis Green as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Now, how drunk is that statement?

Carroll has it all right now -- recruiting is like grocery shopping with the rich. There are no generics being tossed into the cart. It's all name-brand, top-quality items. As a matter of fact, recruits are jumping into the basket. The Trojans rarely lose, play in near-perfect conditions and Carroll, with the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers stinking, and the San Diego Chargers still unproven, is the toast of all of California.

Leaving for the NFL is asking for another embarrassment, and doing so with one of the worst or snakebitten franchises around.

Rumors are fun and elicit conversation but usually are hollow with reality.

So who is Colorado going to hire to replace Ricardo Patton, anyway?

Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, maybe?

Gene Hackman as Norman Dale?
