BuffStampede busts in, breaks down recruiting

The Black and Gold Breakdown met up with BuffStampede.com's Adam Munsterteiger to talk some CU football and basketball and thought, hey, why not share with all the friends of this publication.

I'll speak a little, Adam will talk a lot and well, it's better that way. Let him share what's going on behind the scenes with recruiting and his views on the basketball team.

BGB: Your opinion on the development over the weekend regarding the two verbal commitments at the wide receiver position (Markques Simas and Kendrick Celestine)?

Munsterteiger: They were putting together a really good recruiting class but every time you looked at the commitment list there was a glaring need for playmakers and within one day they pulled in two.

The transition from high school to D-1A football is a big one and you can never say for sure but Celestine and Simas will definitely have every opportunity to play as true freshman.

BGB: Colorado recruiting -- what positions are they looking at to finalize this class, now they have raked in two receivers?

Munsterteiger: Right now, it's d-line, d-line, d-line.

The key there will be getting a handful of mid-year junior college transfers on the defensive line.

One of their top targets that would fill that need is Drew Hudgins, a 240-pound defensive end from Highland Community College in Kansas. He recorded 14 sacks and 28 quarterback pressures as a sophomore.

BGB: What recruits look to be potential impact players, after you get past (OT) Ryan Miller, and Simas and Celestine?

Munsterteiger: One guy who is going to have an opportunity is Garth Gerhart if he's ready to come in and start, with Mark Fenton and Bryce McMartin graduating from the center position.

They are also bringing in Jess Beets, who projects as a center.

Those are two guys who will be battling it out in the fall for the starting position.

BGB: Are there any names that might be academic casualties come fall, as we've seen in the past?

Munsterteiger: Actually, Simas and Celestine are two guys who have a little bit of work to do in the classroom.

Now that they have their recruitment over with, they don't have recruiters calling them every night, they'll hopefully be able to shift al that focus and energy to academics.

BGB: The men's basketball program -- word I'm getting is there is tension between the coaches and players, well beyond coaching and discipline, to the point of being unhealthy for progress.

Does this show up to you in the games?

Munsterteiger: Tough to say. With an inexperienced team like they have you're going to have inconsistencies.

Trying to sell fans on CU basketball this year is like Dan Hawkins would say -- is like putting makeup on a pimple. You have a lame-duck coach, an inexperienced team that is going to have trouble winning 10 games, so it's going to be tough for them to sell tickets the rest of the way.

BGB: How do you evaluate what you've seen from the team to this point?

Munsterteiger: There is still reason for the die hard CU basketball fans (to follow the team).

Xavier Silas, Jeremy Williams, Kal Bay -- these are impressive young basketball players. And Jermyl Jackson-Wilson, it's a treat to watch his hustle, so the next head coach at CU is definitely going to inherit some talent.

BGB: Individually, share what first comes to your mind when I mention these player's names, Adam.

Richard Roby.

Munsterteiger: Inconsistent.

He's had to shoulder a lot of the pressure. Obviously, he doesn't have the supporting cast he did last year. He wasn't forced to put up 18-20 shots per game like he is right now. You couple that with every opponent having him as a marked man.

BGB: Jermyl Jackson-Wilson.

Munsterteiger: Hustle. That's his game.

Finding where opportunities present themselves and taking full advantage of it.

BGB: Dominique Coleman.

Munsterteiger: Streaky but when he's aggressive and going to the hoop, controlled aggression, he's as good a scorer as the team has.

BGB: Xavier Silas.

Munsterteiger: Well rounded, good blood lines, a little more polished than the other true freshman. Going to be exciting to watch him develop the next 3 1/2 years.

BGB: Jeremy Williams.

Munsterteiger: Raw talen who is going to develop, add some size to his frame, which will help him in the low post.

BGB: Kal Bay.

Munsterteiger: A floor general.

He does have a very good outside shot but his best attribute is running the offense. He has range so he will also keep defenses honest.

BGB: Marcus King-Stockton.

Munsterteiger: Experienced.

Hopefully because he is experienced, his leadership will help this team.

BGB: What are you working on right now at BuffStampede.com and what is good about subscribing?

Munsterteiger: If you're a Buff football fanatic, you can follow the recruiting, watch videos of all these commitments before they even get on campus.

You'll be talking in the bars with your buddies who are also Buff fans and you'll be the guy who knows everything.

Newspapers are pretty limited as to what they can offer. We do audio, post-game and post-practice audio too. It's a lot more multimedia that we're able to offer.
