Switzer says Sooners won't play best backup

Oklahoma's dominant running back Adrian Peterson is said to be one of the best talents at the position ever.

Not just at OU but period.

Yet, he won't play against Colorado after breaking his collarbone last week leaping into the end zone on a long touchdown run against Iowa State.

The question this week has been who replaces Peterson, nicknamed A.D. for All Day, as in run all day when he has the pig in his hands?

We've heard Allen Patrick or Jacob Gutierrez or even Mossis Madu but a article in the John Hoover article in the Tulsa World quotes former Sooner coaching great and Super Bowl-winning coach Barry Switzer as saying that Oklahoma's best running back won't replace Peterson.

"My own personal opinion, I wish they had the depth in the secondary where they could put Reggie Smith (at tailback)," Switzer said. "I think Reggie's a great running back. But they don't have great depth, and they have to play Reggie on defense. You have to play great defense first to win."

What a quandary that is, having a wonderful talent to replace Peterson and you can't do it unless you want to rob Peter to pay Paul. Hey, have him go both ways. These guys are supposed to be in great shape, right? And Colorado? Well, they are not quite Notre Dame or USC in the passing game right now so do you really need that stud safety against them? Yes, the Buffs are running the ball better lately and you need a safety in run support but the Sooners are very good upfront, lessening the need for the top talent in the secondary. Maybe you can pull off a win against Colorado with the other running backs but what about the rest of your schedule?

That said, I'm sure the running backs who do play will be effective. They just won't be as effective as Peterson.
