Buffs stretching recruiting territory, get verbal

Maybe someone has been watching senior defensive end Abe Wright or maybe it was just that stellar effort against his homestate Bulldogs that convinced prep star Conrad Obi to switch his verbal commitment from Georgia to Colorado.

The story, reported by the Daily Camera's Kyle Ringo, says Obi is a four-star player who measures in at 6-foot-4, 240 pounds

What it doesn't say is why Obi decided the Buffs are a better match for him than the Dawgs.

Well, outside of playing time, maybe even replacing Wright next season, why did Obi switch? Playing time sounds intriguing but in the end most preps sign on marquee value.

For Obi, the reason remains to be seen.

However, here are some bits on Peach-state playmaker.

In a Will Hammock story in the Gwinnett Daily Post, Obi's high school coach said his star defender is always plugged in.

“The thing that makes (Obi) really good is how hard he plays,” Conn said. “He’s plays relentless. He’s got what college coaches say is a great motor.”

And the colleges that noticed him is a who's who of powerhouses, as Florida, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia were just a few who were eyeing his talent.

It has also been reported that Obi originally verballed to the Bulldogs because he has a brother in school in Athens, and that the program and the coaching staff was his favorite.

Next question...come signing day, is Obi still a Buff? Traveling that far away from home, to a team destined to keep losing while Georgia heads the other direction? Call me cynical but I think this is a very soft commitment. If it sticks, it is a Dan Hawkins score, finding talent in Pennsylvania and now Georgia. Impressive. But if the Buffs close recruiting like they close games, this will be a late loss. Hawkins has to show some Bobby Bowden, which means making sure that charm works wonders in living rooms.
