CU beats Baylor, Big 12 picks, Billingsley hurt

Baylor is picked by collegefootballnews.com to beat CU, continuing the Buffs' woes.

The publication says Bears' quarterback Shawn Bell will "have a field day against the Buffs' secondary."

Hate to do this, as I think it is foolish, but I'm going to make a prediction right now. CU wins this game. From the smack talk out of Waco where some Baylor players seem to think they are Mike Singletary now, to pundits thinking the Buffs are really as bad as their record, I'm nauseated.

CU is no powerhouse and an early-McCartney-type record is on tap, just as I thought at the beginning of the season, but Saturday is this program's day, taking Baylor down.

Yes, the Bears will move the football but I also think they will struggle to put points on the board, make some turnovers and the Buffs' offense will improve just a little more.

Then the celebration will start, like CU won the national championship, with talk being the program just turned the corner, as all the frustration, at least for a week, will be relieved.

While I'm being stupid

Since I have broken my rule about not making predictions, let's do some more this week.

Nebraska is improved, but they are not the Huskers of yesteryear. However, the school is still good enough to beat Iowa State, a program that has in the past given them fits at times.

Nebraska's offense is simply too high-powered with quarterback Zac Taylor and the young running backs like Marlon Lucky.

Missouri over Texas Tech solely because of the Tigers balance on offense. Missouri can run the ball effectively and once that's established, quarterback Chase Daniel can do his thing and very well. Tech can throw the ball, we all know that, but the Tigers' defense is probably good enough. The only area that concerns me is the game is in Lubbock.

Texas and Oklahoma. Not quite the marquee matchup of well-known talent it's been in the past but two accomplished programs, two high-profile coaches and still talent-rich teams.

The Sooners were shaky earlier in the season in their loss to Oregon, despite being done by the officials. Texas is not the same team as last year but still awfully good. OU needs to establish Adrian Peterson and put doubt in Longhorns' quarterback Colt McCoy's head early in the game to win.

Texas needs to bust some runs on the Sooners out of the tunnel, then McCoy needs to get into a rhythm hitting his receivers. Defensively for UT, it all starts and ends with stopping Peterson.

In the end, OU's defense will prove to be a little too porous to win the game, and offensively, not potent enough, especially without a proven quarterback. McCoy will be effective, with a sufficient running attack, allowing him time to complete passes way down field.

Harris to start for Billingsley

The Daily Camera is reporting senior standout safety J.J. Billingsley, who has been at CU, well, since the school started a football program, will likely be replaced by Lionel Harris, due to injury. The hope is Harris doesn't play like the old electric football where he just spins out of control.

Replacing Billingsley's football smarts, playmaking and experience won't be easy.

Also reported by the Camera is former CU quarterback Kordell Stewart was at practice Wednesday. Word is "Slash" was willing to play any position to get on the field. Guessing Dan Hawkins had to think on it for a moment before deciding against breaking eligibility rules.
