The menu, recruiting noise

The Black and Gold Truth menu is about done.

Friday morning, the BGT will ask Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning News just how Billy Gillispie is making it happen at Texas A & M.

Monday morning, it's an interview with CU athletic director Mike Bohn about the athletic department and the challenges in making it strong again.

Then on Tuesday, it's Adam Munsterteiger of BuffStampede.com to discuss football recruiting.

But you don't just have to wait for all that as this weekend, full breakdowns on the developing conference race and the games being played. Also, the big Sunday Truth column.

Hope to catch you here.

Strausser latest transfer

Not only are players packing up their tent and riding out of Boulder but a coach is too as assistant head football coach Chris Strausser is returning to Boulder.

BGT: Now, can't talk to coach Dan Hawkins but if one were to speculate, something just doesn't look right, smell right, add up, know what I mean? One year and done? Assistant head football coach and he gives that up? There is more to the story. Has to be. To speculate further would be a monumental challenge to be accurate but will say this -- Strausser is not leaving just because he and his family love Boise. One day, more facts will come out but for now, for Strausser, Boise State, Hawkins and CU, everyone is keeping it all "don't tell daddy" quiet.

What's up with Texans?

I noticed it, Kyle Ringo wrote about it in the Daily Camera, and many should be wondering about it.

Dan Hawkins and his staff did an excellent job branching out and picking talent from all over the country, hopefully establishing new talent pools, something no other coach did to this extent in the past.

Yet...

You knew there had to be a "yet." No players from Texas? Really? Yes, it is assumed that Texas and all those other state schools are going to get the majority of those players and premier programs like OU, USC, Michigan, Florida, etc. are going to get some bling-bling players but CU getting shut out? Not getting one real talent from a place Bill McCartney once used to mine for the likes of Alfred Williams, Kanavis McGee, Chris Hudson, Arthur Walker, Marcus Stiggers and more?

Sure, times have changed but not one name? Word will get out that CU doesn't recruit Texas. True or not, some half-wits will believe it. That said, I'm thinking the Buffs are back in the Lone Star state in 2007 and bagging some quality for the that recruiting class.

Hagan smack

Darian Hagan was an electrifying talent and had "winner" written all over him. The Magic Man was one for the ages. The school would be lucky to ever have another who took the school to the heights he did.

But calling recruit P.T. Gates a "Reggie Bush-type of guy" in a Kyle Ringo story in the Daily Camera, well, please!

You realize coach Hagan some people will now expect him to rush for 1,500-2,000 yards, break swing passes for scores and return punts for "6" frequently?

Brother, why not load Gates up with a backpack full of cement instead of those compliments? Yes, Mike Moschetti told me the same thing and Gates might truly be a playmaker but let's see it for our own eyes first.

Shhh...

The one thing that concerns me is why was Gates not pulled in the direction of a more well-established power if he's the real deal? We didn't hear anything like "oh no, Gates could be signing with Michigan, Texas or Florida State."

Bottom line is Gates has better talent on paper/film than recent running backs in Folsom, which is exciting, but to infer he could be a potential great, as Hagan did, also mentioning the name of Eric Bieniemy, who was the toughest, most driven, talented back ever to play at CU (sorry Rashaan Salaam), is too much.

However, there is no doubting that Hawkins' offense needed a jolt of speed, ability and depth in his backfield. On that front, mission accomplished.

Position changes

So Chapelle Brown is moving from cornerback to receiver?

Is it because Hawkins didn't get enough talent alongside Markques Simas, Kendrick Celestine and Josh Smith or because Brown dissatisfied the coach in the defensive backfield?

Joe Sanders moving from linebacker to tight end "says" he proved he couldn't make enough plays on "D" and will now become a reserve tight end behind Riar Geer and Tyson DeVree.

The bubble

Progress, no matter how big or small you see it, is being made.

The lemonade stand brought in enough money at CU to be able to afford a practice bubble, something that Buff coaches have put on their Christmas list for years.

Now, $ 2.9 million is a lot of dough to be raised so it wasn't an easy purchase but the thinking here is there will be no buyer's remorse. If CU wants to be a legitimate Big-12 program, it has to dig deep and have money in the bottom of its' and other people's pockets to get in the game.

For those that criticize Mike Bohn, wonder if any credit will come his way for this accomplisment?

CU is not Texas or Nebraska now and never will be but it can give itself a much better opportunity to compete with some sweat in the fields. Rome wasn't built in a day. It all starts with that first step.
