Cowboys undressed again, Sutton desired

Oklahoma State once looked like a team capable of very good things this season.

The fact is those Cowboys are pretenders, as yet another weak performance showed Monday when Texas smacked OSU, 83-54, in Austin.

Oh sure, the Pokes can be exciting to watch, especially in that outpost called Stillwater, with Mario Boggan and JamesOn Curry scoring points as a potent one-two punch but OSU only ends up getting the scraps off the Big-12 table. When it comes time to step up and put up, they get shut down and corralled.

Of course, playing the Longhorns is not an easy day at the office. Kevin Durant is one of the most skilled players on the planet, a future NBA all-time great and his point guard D.J. Augustin is an NBA player in-training as well. Those two saddled up and yee-hawed all night long at OSU's expense, totaling 40 points, 16 rebounds, 11 assists and five steals.

Black and Gold Truth: Texas is dangerous and scares everyone in this conference and nationally on any given day. Remember though how young they are and how one bad stretch and they are vulnerable. Oklahoma State looks like a one-and-done team in the postseason right now. Maybe they win a game but that's hardly a given.

Letters

Matt is in his office, wondering how the BGT could miss so big on an obvious top-quality candidate for a new head coach of the men's basketball program.

"I was looking through your list of possible coaches to replace RP and noticed my #1 choice was missing. Sean Sutton!!!! What a great coach who fulfills all your characteristics of the next head coach. He’s a young, passionate coach who has excelled at Oral Roberts and is someone I believe who is ready to coach in a BCS conference. Also in the ‘intangibles’ he would bring the spotlight to CU with the OSU-CU matchups. Also, the name alone is one that would get the press talking. We passed on his Dad, we can’t afford to miss on him. Keep up the good work and go Buffs!"

BGT: Matt, what a cementhead I am. How I missed on Sutton in the past and now, well, I should be benched for a few minutes, don't you think? That is a turnover on my part. There is something about Sutton, from afar, that makes you think he could do the job at a high level. Not sure I would put him at no. 1, Matt, or even my personal top 5 but he should at least get an invite to the party.

Monty being hunted

One name that excites some CU fans is former Stanford and Golden State Warriors' coach Mike Montgomery. It became a foregone conclusion that the Buffs could not afford his price tag and his name was seemingly quickly discounted as a candidate to replace Ricardo Patton.

Now this from Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News:

"Don't be surprised if Santa Clara tries to hire Mike Montgomery, the former coach at Stanford. Broncos coach Dick Davey is retiring at the end of the season, squeezed out by an administration that has seen what Gonzaga accomplishes in the West Coast Conference and wonders why Santa Clara can't do the same. Davey has done a fine job despite stringent academic requirements -- as well as the daunting presence of the Zags -- and had the Broncos tied for first place in the WCC entering the week. Santa Clara can offer Montgomery the chance to be a Division I coach without having to move from the Bay Area. Taking the job might allow Montgomery to work with his son, John, who is playing his final season at Loyola Marymount and wants to become a basketball coach."

BGT: Admire family coming first but Santa Clara over Colorado? Don't see it going down with Montgomery at a school like that but hey, who knows. While I like him I also don't believe he's among the better choices for Boulder. All that losing in Golden State took something out of him, especially at his age and all that he has accomplished. Please, no comparisons with Tim Floyd, formerly of the Chicago Bulls and now at USC. Floyd has always been a winner because he works recruiting so hard to go with his coaching ability. Montgomery was a nice thought but just that, a thought.

How did that happen

For those who think Gary Barnett got a raw deal when he got forced out at Colorado how do you explain Marty Schottenheimer getting stabbed in the back in San Diego. So he hasn't won a Super Bowl -- the goal every season-- but how many teams did he get to the playoffs in his years as a head coach? While the coach has to get it done, it isn't always his fault if they fail. Sometimes the pieces are missing.

And I thought that you got a pass from your boss for thinking he's a fool as long as you do your job very well.

Schottenheimer didn't, despite being one of the winningest coaches in history. Indianapolis didn't kick Tony Dungy to the curb, Pittsburgh didn't do it to Bill Cowher and both ended up winning Super Bowls.

Egos brought along this divorce and the Chargers will be worse off for it.

Husker needs attention

Nebraska running back Marlon Lucky was taken to a hospital Sunday evening for reasons not disclosed following a Lincoln police visit to his residence, according to a Associated Press report.

Lucky, a sophomore, was the Cornhuskers' second-leading rusher last season with 728 yards and six touchdowns. He also caught 32 passes for 383 yards.

BGT note: Today, I speak with Adam Munsterteiger of BuffStampede.com about the Buffs' recruiting and on Wednesday, the conversation I had with CU athletic director Mike Bohn gets posted.

Nuggets/NBA: For the Denver Nuggets and NBA fix, here's a side order, on the house, from NuggetsNoise.blogspot.com.
