Surgery wonder; new leg; Dunlap truth

Terrence Wheatley is all about resiliency. No matter how much he has to overcome with a file cabinet full of injuries, he keeps gettin' it done on the field.

Solid story in the Daily Camera today from Kyle Ringo on T-Wheat.

The fear is his body is on borrowed time but CU hopes he can go through the wars one more full season. If that happens, the Buffs will be better for it because the defense will have a difference maker on a team currently in short supply of them. If the Buffs hope to contend for a winning record in 2007, they need a healthy, productive Wheatley. And if the speedy, cracked-up defensive back wants a future in uniform, he needs to show he can stay on that field.

His NFL prospects will be as dependent on how serious his health issues are seen as much as his solid talent.

More Ringo

Ringo also did a little work on new Buffs' kicker Kevin Eberhart.

Well, he ain't new but he is the one who got promoted to replace legendary Mason Crosby, who is ready to start gettin' paid to do the thing he does with that golden leg.

Eberhart is thought to be a capable talent but CU coach Dan Hawkins didn't really give him a glowing review.

"I think he'll be fine. I really do," Hawkins said. "We'll miss Mason. He's a great kid and a great player, but I think Kevin will be fine."

Fine?

Now if Hawkins was a chick, I'd say "fine" rarely means fine, but since he's a man, we'll take him at his word. But will add this -- the coach isn't overwhelmed by the new guy. Of course, the standard for excellence went way up after Crosby.

Time will tell with Eberhart. Hopefully, with a superior performance by the offense, Eberhart won't have to be the difference in most games. Accuracy should be his goal more than trying to be Mr. Big Foot.

Dunlap as candidate a cheap firework

Mike Dunlap
was once a red-hot candidate in the media and amongst a certain faction of fans to replace Ricardo Patton as coach of the CU men's basketball program.

But for as blue a flame as that talk once was, it went out quickly.

Did you catch Denver Nuggets' coach George Karl's comments in Patrick Ridgell's story in the Longmont Daily Times-Call on why Dunlap got cold feet?

Check it out.

“I don’t think he really wants (the job); I think he wants to be with us,” Karl said. “That’s my feeling. I hate talking for him, but my feeling is he came here to learn, he’s been multiply impressed by what he has learned and he wants to continue to do that.”

O.K., coach, whatever. Yeah, maybe Dunlap might enjoy learning the NBA game but truth is truth and head coaches want to be head coaches and that's Dunlap's goal and deepest hunger. The reason he pulled out early on CU is either he feels he's not getting the Buffs' post (coaches do this all the time), or he was dissatisfied with the "set-up" in Boulder regarding the facilities, budget, whatever, not feeling it gave him the chance to build on his winning reputation.

Them other guys

Kansas State may have got snubbed for the NCAA Tournament but that hasn't stopped its' new-found winning ways as it held off Vermont in the NIT, 59-57, as Cartier Martin led the way with 19 points.

Next up for the winners is a meeting with DePaul.

BGT: Bob Huggins is only getting started in Manhattan. The Wildcats are going to be a threat to the top of the Big 12 very soon. He's winning now with moderate talent and tremendous coaching and leadership.

Side road

Air Force rocked Austin Peay, 75-51, in another NIT game. The rumors of Falcons' coach Jeff Bzdelik having his mail forwarded to the basketball offices at CU can't be hotter right now and with each Air Force victory the flames will be fanned.

NCAA dates

Big 12 schools are ready to show off in the NCAA Tournament with four schools invited to the party.

Out East, Texas Tech meets up with Boston College. If guards truly matter this time of year then the Red Raiders have the advantage but on the inside, Texas Tech is going to get bullied by the Golden Eagles.

In the South, Texas A & M meets Pennsylvania. No one is expecting the Quakers to hang with the Aggies, at least publicly.

Out West, it's Kansas taking on Niagra in what should be a scrimmage. The Jayhawks are rolling right now and this game, despite being a postseason affair, should be over early.

In the East, it's youthful but powerful Texas playing dangerous New Mexico State in what should be an entertaining, high-scoring track meet.

Take this exit

Pete Rose
has finally admitted he bet on baseball.

In every game he managed.

O.K.

See, some people chew sunflower seeds, others play practical jokes, some check out the hotties in the stands, some inject steroids but Rose just preferred to keep things interesting.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

If he would have admitted this to begin with, maybe he'd be forgiven by now. It ain't goin' to happen any time soon after he lied about it for so many years.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

And no invitation to the Hall of Fame.

One day, he will get in but that still looks to be years away.
