Buffs withstand Maric, beat Huskers

I go before coach Ricardo Patton and take my punishment as CU did what they needed to do, which is to beat a team they should beat at home.

This is not a Tommie Frazier-led Nebraska team -- this is Alexs Maric and company, which is decent, nothing more.

73-69, Buffs.

Maric did his damage again, hitting for 22 points and recording 12 rebounds but the Huskers shot but 38 percent from the field.

Richard Roby can play, not matter his struggles this season. He had 23 points.

Dominique Coleman, one of the biggest enigmas in some time, had 15 points and 15 rebounds.

And Jermyl Jackson-Wilson had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Black and Gold Truth: Maybe this victory doesn't mean much outside the family of the CU team but good for all of them, who have had such a painful public season. Roby is still on the NBA radar and if the right coach is brought in there is no reason RR can't be a big-time player and leader next season. Matter of fact, his presence should be one hook for a new coach.

Coleman can be amazing with his ability to board, pass and score. He is no one-trick pony. What he is not is consistent or the dangerous scorer he was in junior college.

The next maestro at CU must expect higher standards on defense and consistent effort and production. The Buffs don't lack talent although a quality big man would be a welcome present.

Kal Bay hit a late 3-pointer, again showing he can be a significant factor as a shooter, something CU needs more of to get better. Still think he can be a rock-solid player, the third scorer you need to be balanced and strong.

Athletic director Mike Bohn recognized Patton's leadership before the game, a gesture that had to be difficult, if only for the tension you know has to be there. Bohn did the right thing, making sure Patton's contributions were applauded publicly. Guessing it was awkward for Patton, who would have wished for more support during his tenure.

In the end, all but a minimal amount of divorces are painful. This one is no different.

It's still not over.

For a day, however, it's something positive.
