Hackett wanted, job interviews, giant task

Former CU wide receiver D.J. Hackett was tendered a contract offer by his team, Seattle, after having his best season -- 45 catches for 610 yards and four touchdowns.

Hackett was a fifth-round pick of the Seahawks in the 2004 NFL draft.

In two years as a Buff, Hackett climbed to 11th all-time on the receiving list with 93 grabs for 1,194 yards and nine scores. He ranks just ahead of Dave Hestera and just behind Darrin Chiaverini. Hackett holds the school record for receptions in a season with 78 (for 1,013 yards) in 2003.

On the move

In an ESPN.com story by Len Paquarelli, he talks about future job sites for some ex-Buffs, saying that tight end Daniel Graham's most likely destination is Seattle or Denver and that safety Michael Lewis could end up with the Carolina Panthers.

Buffs again face giant

Colorado gets a winnable game on Saturday, hosting Nebraska. No "Tom Osborne is tough to beat" or "have you seen the Huskers' weight room" excuses for CU coach Ricardo Patton.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news yet again but look for Nebraska to try to get center Alexs Maric the ball just a little. The big Australian has a 41-point game and other games of 36 and 31 points. He punished CU for 28 the first time the two teams met.

Who dat gonna' check Maric?

Sorry, don't have the answer on that one.

Dem' other guys

No. 15 Texas at Kansas
Missouri at no. 7 Texas A & M
Texas Tech at Iowa State
Oklahoma at Kansas State
Oklahoma State at Baylor

The Word

Most likely to get upset:
Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Kansas

Most likely to coast: don't see any runaway trains this weekend

Best game: Texas at Kansas...wow, what a track meet this will be

CU line: Sorry, don't kill the messenger, but the Huskers, because of Maric, by 5, even though it wouldn't shock me to see the Buffs pull the rabbit out of the hat in this game.

UT-KU pick: Am I stupid? I don't want to go out on that shaky branch and pick a winner in this one but just so you don't think I'm yella I'll say the Jayhawks, who are really turning it up. It will be close and it wouldn't surprise me to see another overtime game with the Horns but I'll go with the home team. Kevin Durant, however, will put on a show, as will D.J. Augustin. I wouldn't miss this game -- it could be special. KU by 3.

Self indulgence

Can't help myself -- have to make some comments on the Denver Broncos' move to trade running back Tatum Bell, offensive tackle George Foster and a fifth-round pick in the 2007 NFL draft for cornerback Dre Bly.

Bly is an attractive veteran presence to play in the secondary but that was a pretty-spendy transaction, wasn't it?

Bell has almost 2,ooo yards rushing in the last two seasons, is capable of breaking off the long run on an offense that was putrid in 2006, Foster is huge and a starter until acrimony with the coaches last season and then a fifth-round selection in the draft when its' obvious the Broncos need a lot of help, well it all seems, what am I trying to say, no date-for-the-prom-desperate.

Yes, Darrent Williams' death necessitated a move at cornerback, yes, Bly is a smallish, if older playmaker like Williams. Yes, Foster was very disappointing last year. Yes, Denver doesn't have to reach for a cornerback in the draft like they did with Deltha O'Neal some years ago.
But is Denver being a little cocky believing they just pulled off a Champ Bailey-type of deal?

BGT: Bly could be the ball-hawk the Broncos need and quality cornerbacks are hard to find but how about playing some poker with Detroit instead of walking into the car dealership and saying I have a lot of money to spend, where do you want me to put it all?

Word on the street is also Bly is a Deion Sanders-type of tackler, which is to say he wets himself when forced into making a tackle. He also sounds like former Denver corner Terrell Buckley, who would make the great play then turn around and get toasted, roasted, burned.

My guess is Denver and certain members of the media will say and write what a great deal this was and how it had to happen and how Bell and Foster were not going to return but that's a little fact and a lot of spin. It was overpayment, although maybe it helped with salary flexibility.

Guess that Jake Plummer and Bell deal to Houston for a first-round pick was just smoke.

Look for the Broncos now to seek offensive line help in the draft, a much-needed pass rusher and a new running back unless they shockingly and foolishly go after the just-released pharmaceutical distributor Jamal Lewis.

Coming soon: Spoke to Buffs' wide receiver Dusty Sprague yesterday and will bring that conversation your way Monday. Hoping to go one-on-one today with a former CU quarterback crusher. If that materializes, you can have a serving of that talk next week too.

This weekend, look for the basketball recaps and breakdowns and the Sunday Truth column.

Best your way,

Truth
