Big nights in Big 12

Eleventh-ranked Texas A & M rolled over a 10-win team in Winthrop, 71-51, by shooting 54 percent from the floor and getting a combined 57 points from just three players -- the experienced, talented guard Acie Law, the big Lithuanian center Antanas Kavaliauskas and hotshot freshman guard Josh Carter.

Black and Gold Truth: If Law and Carter are on, that is a backcourt that can be difficult to handle. Remember Carter's name. He is an explosive scorer already, averaging over 18 points in his last five games.

No. 12 Oklahoma State blitzkriegs Southwest Oklahoma, 129-77, shooting 64 percent in the win. Forward Mario Boggan, one of the best inside talents in the conference, dominated with 36 points and eight rebounds and guard JamesOn Curry exploded for 31 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

BGT: Boggan is a Big 12 player of the year candidate and Curry is one of the better scoring guards in the country. Coach Sean Sutton has the Cowboys off and running and I doubt few are thinking of his father's sad end to his career.

Texas blows out Texas-Arlington, 84-52, as freshman star forward Kevin Durant dominates with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Longhorn fans can already hear the countdown to Durant leaving school at the end of the season for the NBA draft. Sophomore guard A.J. Abrams went for 20 more for UT.

BGT: The Longhorns might not be a team to run deep into the NCAA tournament but they are exciting to watch and will be a player in the Big 12 race. Durant is better than departed UT players Chris Mihm, T.J. Ford and LaMarcus Aldridge. He's a future NBA all star. Yet, that's not all the Longhorns have as Abrams, freshman point D.J. Augustin and forward Damion James are all big time.

Missouri beats Mississippi State, 83-75, handing the Bulldogs only their fourth loss of the young season, as junior guard Stefhon Hannah, a name mentioned here as one to watch, ripped up the Southeastern Conference school for 27 points.

BGT: Mike Anderson has been a breath of fresh air in Columbia replacing Quin Snyder. Anderson, a Nolan Richardson disciple, might just do some very good things before he's done. He already is changing the atmosphere of that program.

Baylor keeps winning, beating Centenary, 76-63, as sophomore guard Curtis Jerrells did it all -- 14 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Freshman guard, and first-team all-nickname, Tweety Carter, also added 14 points.

BGT: The Bears are playing well and flying under the radar. They likely will fall back once the conference season begins but they are beginning to do good things in Waco.

On the field...The Philadelphia Eagles brought back quarterback Koy Detmer, one of the better signal callers in CU history as they prepare for the playoffs. Detmer played nine seasons with the Eagles before being waived. Coach Andy Reid loves talent but he likes "smart" too and Detmer is an experienced mind as an emergency go-to guy should it get to that.
