Buff Cuts...NFL heartbreak, Brown waived

Final cutdown time as NFL teams set their season-opening rosters and the news was not good for many Colorado Buffaloes, as six former black and golds were released.

Linebacker Chad Brown was the biggest name as the accomplished veteran was let go by New England. Brown came into the NFL as a second-round selection of the Pittsburgh Steelers and quickly excelled on one of the top linebacking and defensive units in the league. He parlayed that into a lucrative free-agent deal with Seattle. The Patriots were his third team. In his career, the 36-year old Brown has totaled 1,019 tackles, registered 78 sacks, forced 18 fumbles and picked off six passes.

He dropped quarterbacks 13 times in 1996 with the Steelers, had 151 tackes in 1998 with the Seahawks but slipped to 39 tackles a season ago with New England.

As a Buff, Brown finished with 369 tackles, which was fourth best in school history at the time. He since has been passed by Ted Johnson and Matt Russell, who also played in the NFL. During his days in Boulder, he played with Johnson as well as Greg Biekert, a CU-tackling machine and a longtime professional with the Raiders and Minnesota.

Fellow linebacker Brian Iwuh was let go by Jacksonville, a tough team to make as the Jaguars are loaded defensively. Cornerback Donald Strickland, who entered the league as an Indianapolis Colt draft pick, was cut by Philadelphia. San Francisco released longtime veteran punter Tom Rouen as well as offensive tackle Sam Wilder. The Washington Redskins said goodbye to defensive lineman Vaka Manupuna.
